Music is one of life’s greatest pleasures. It has the power to command our attention and be a constant source of inspiration. It also helps us to express who we are as human beings. Music education furthers self-discipline, memory, motivation and literacy. It also promotes communication and teamworking skills.

Malvern College Hong Kong regards music culture as indispensable for school life and awards music scholarships to talented and deserving pupils from Prep 5 (Y5) onwards.  The purpose of a music scholarship is to promote and further a culture of music and concert performance within the school.

The school considers candidates who have reached the equivalent of a good Grade 5 (ABRSM or Trinity) standard in at least one instrument or singing. Successful candidates demonstrate general musicianship in alignment with their technical abilities. Musical potential and commitment are as important to the school as past and present musical achievements.

Music scholars show an active involvement and interest in music and concert performance. They are expected to contribute to the school’s musical life and represent Malvern College Hong Kong in performances.

I’m extremely honoured to be a Malvern Scholar, and the leadership opportunities it has given me to lead other young talents a step closer to their musical aspirations. These experiences include conducting performances, having the school orchestra play my original compositions and directing my own original musical. The teachers have supported me wholeheartedly, and my peers have engaged enthusiastically with my musical projects.

This year marks my 12th year performing as a soloist with the HK Philharmonic Orchestra and my third year performing alongside the school orchestra as a piano soloist. As a music scholar, I’m able to practice with talented musicians to prepare for these performances.

At university, I’d like to major in music and also humanities/political science in the US (I’m passionate about Model United Nations, in which I’ve been a chair and an award-winning delegate at multiple conferences), or pursue a subject along the lines of history/law in the UK. My two dream professions at the moment are being a lawyer or an educator.

Advice for other applicants: Be as genuine as possible for your area of interest and explore as much as you can about it! For example, if you’re a music lover, try to go to a variety of concerts.
