Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK), we champion the transformative power of outdoor learning. We believe that access to an outdoor environment is as essential to a child’s well-being and development as traditional classroom settings, offering unique opportunities for exploration and hands-on discovery.

As part of MCHK’s Signature Programme, our outdoor educational experiences and trips are designed to nurture curious, confident, and environmentally conscious learners.

The Malvern Journey

Forest-Beach School (Prep 1-3)

Child-led learning focused on the five senses and resilience.

Malvern College Hong Kong is one of the first schools in Hong Kong to operate a Forest-Beach School programme, and proudly holds the Centre of Excellence title. Managed by our Level 4 trained and accredited Outdoor Learning Trainer, the Forest-Beach School programme for pupils in Prep 1 to 3 is built on a philosophy of child-led learning, with a focus on all five senses. It runs in all safe weather conditions.

Collaborative games and group activities foster a sense of camaraderie and resilience. Individual self-esteem and practical skills are sharpened through hands-on experiences such as shelter building, tool handling, and fire lighting - each carefully supervised by our qualified Forest-Beach School educators.

Activities may include: Shelter building | Nature exploration | Team challenges | Tool handling under supervision | Environmental awareness | Outdoor creative play

Outdoor Learning & Expeditions (Prep 4-6)

Curriculum-aligned inquiry through nature parks and residential camps.

In Upper Prep, pupils immerse themselves in educational experiences designed around the IB Units of Inquiry. Alongside nature park visits that promote critical thinking, students participate in residential camps that foster resilience, teamwork, and independence.

Our curriculum bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world observations. Through hands-on activities, pupils study biodiversity and conservation, while our residential camps—featuring canoeing and rock climbing—challenge them to develop essential life skills.

Working collaboratively in small groups, pupils tackle problem-solving tasks that require effective communication and collective decision-making, preparing them to become engaged, global citizens.

Inquiry-based learning linked to IB Units of Inquiry. Focuses on biodiversity, conservation, and collaborative team-building through canoeing and rock climbing.

Outdoor Learning & Expeditions (Senior)

Global perspective through international expeditions and environmental projects.

Outdoor learning remains a core pillar of the Senior curriculum. Through curriculum-aligned field trips to destinations like Thailand, Norway, and China, and global initiatives such as the 'Malvern Mingle' programme, we foster environmental stewardship and a truly global perspective.

  • Real-World Impact: Senior students engage in projects, such as coral planting in Koh Lanta, Thailand, which bridges theoretical marine biology and environmental sustainability with global conservation efforts.
  • Global Connectivity: Our 'Malvern Mingle' programme connects pupils with peers across the global Malvern family, nurturing camaraderie and a shared commitment to the values that underpin our educational philosophy.
  • Future-Ready: By engaging with diverse cultures and environments, we prepare our pupils to become the informed, responsible, and compassionate global citizens required in today’s interconnected world.

Includes MYP/DP field trips (Thailand, Norway, China) and coral planting initiatives. Fosters global stewardship through the 'Malvern Mingle' programme.

The Hong Kong Award for Young People (Ages 14+)

The prestigious Duke of Edinburgh framework for personal growth.

The HKAYP, an international Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, challenges our pupils in service, skills, physical recreation, and expeditions. Since its inception, participants have demonstrated adaptability and resilience while overcoming various challenges.

The programme has expanded over time, introducing the Silver Level and potential field practice abroad, fostering personal growth and essential life skills development.

"The expedition taught me that I could achieve more than I thought possible. It challenged me physically and mentally, but it also helped me build confidence and friendships that will stay with me for years."
