Language (English & Chinese)

Developing confident communicators through critical analysis, creative expression, and global perspectives

Overview

Language learning in the Prep stage at Malvern College Hong Kong aims to cultivate an appreciation for language and empower our young learners to communicate effectively in both English and Chinese. Through structured English (Readers & Writers' Workshop) and Chinese learning experiences, pupils engage with various texts and forms of communication, enhancing their literacy skills and broadening their understanding of global perspectives.

Developing confident communicators through critical analysis, creative expression, and global perspectives, our comprehensive Language programme at MCHK prepares pupils to communicate effectively in a multilingual world, enabling them to thrive in diverse environments.

Teaching Approach

The Prep language curriculum embraces an inquiry-based and pupil-centered methodology, encouraging pupils to explore language use in diverse contexts. Key elements of the teaching approach include:

Critical Analysis

Pupils participate in close reading and analysis of texts in both English and Chinese, examining stories, poetry, and informational materials. This fosters their ability to identify themes and understand the intent of authors, deepening their literary appreciation.

Creative Expression

Pupils are encouraged to express themselves creatively through various writing tasks and presentations. They develop their voices in English through narrative, descriptive, and persuasive forms, as well as engage with Chinese language learning that enhances their expression across cultures.

Interdisciplinary Connections

Language learning connects with other subjects in the primary curriculum, allowing pupils to explore language's role in shaping culture and society. This interdisciplinary approach enriches their understanding of the world around them.

Collaborative Learning

Group discussions, peer feedback, and collaborative projects create a positive learning environment. Pupils learn from one another’s perspectives, enhancing their communication and social skills.

English (Readers & Writers’ Workshop)

In the English component (Readers & Writers' Workshop) the programme fosters a love for reading and writing through immersive experiences. Pupils engage in rich literature that captivates their imagination and inspires their writing. They participate in various activities, including guided reading, independent writing projects, and collaborative storytelling, which encourage creativity and critical thinking. Through this approach, pupils develop essential literacy skills alongside their peers, fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment.

Pupils engage in literary exploration by examining diverse genres, styles, and forms of literature in English, helping them recognise key literary devices and thematic elements. The curriculum also emphasises language use and structure, enabling children to adapt their communication for different audiences while fostering personal expression through creative writing and storytelling.

Chinese Language Pathways

In addition to English, Prep pupils will have five lessons of Chinese per week, reinforcing their language skills in Mandarin using simplified characters. Our Chinese curriculum is designed to promote proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Chinese language. Pupils engage in interactive lessons that include storytelling, role-playing, and traditional songs, which enhance their oral communication and comprehension skills. This immersive approach not only broadens their linguistic abilities but also deepens their appreciation for Chinese culture and its global significance.

Pupils will be grouped into classes according to their proficiency and understanding of the Chinese language. There are three distinct pathways available, as outlined below.

Pathway 1: Emerging Communicator

Designed for pupils who have demonstrated an initial baseline understanding of the spoken and written Chinese language through formal diagnostic assessment.

Pathway 2: Developing Communicator

Targeted toward pupils who have demonstrated a fundamental, structured understanding of the spoken and written language through formal and informal assessment benchmarks.

Pathway 3: Confident Communicator

Tailored for pupils who have demonstrated a high level of fluid proficiency and native/near-native familiarity in spoken and written language through formal and informal assessment.

Through our comprehensive Language programme at MCHK, pupils are prepared to communicate effectively in a multilingual world, enabling them to thrive in diverse environments.

IB PYP Alignment

Linking to the PYP Framework

The language curriculum in Prep is an essential part of the Primary Years Programme, connecting pupils’ learning to real-world themes and issues. By analysing literature and engaging in meaningful discussions, they gain insights into human experiences, cultivating empathy and critical thinking.

This curriculum supports the development of key IB learner profile attributes, such as becoming communicators, open-minded, and reflective. By enhancing their language skills in both English and Chinese, pupils are well-prepared for future academic challenges and effective communication in an increasingly interconnected world.
