Fostering Physical Wellness and Team Spirit Through Active Engagement
Physical Education (PE) in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) plays a vital role in the holistic development of pupils, promoting not only physical fitness but also emotional, social, and cognitive growth. The PYP approach to PE emphasises active engagement, teamwork, and the enjoyment of movement, encouraging pupils to develop a lifelong appreciation for a healthy lifestyle.
In the Primary Years Programme, Physical Education (P.E) provides our pupils with the opportunity to develop their skills and overall health through a diverse array of team and individual sports. Utilising our state-of-the-art facilities, including a 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool, Sky Pitch, and an Indoor Sports Hall equipped for various ball sports such as volleyball, badminton, basketball, and cricket, pupils experience high-quality physical education. Throughout the year, pupils participate in a rotating schedule of sports, including football, basketball, badminton, cricket, and athletics, allowing them to hone a variety of skills and explore their personal interests.
Additionally, each pupil receives an annual block of swimming lessons in our modern pool, focusing on building water safety skills and enhancing swimming proficiency to promote overall fitness and confidence in the water.
Developing fundamental skills through structured games, sports, and expressive dance, enabling pupils to systematically build core coordination, spatial awareness, and physical agility.
Introducing individual and team sports—such as football, basketball, badminton, cricket, athletics, and gymnastics—while consistently emphasising fair play, strategic thinking, and teamwork.
Educating pupils about the importance of physical fitness, proper nutrition, and healthy choices, fostering a deep, practical understanding of personal health, biology, and lifelong well-being.
Engaging in outdoor activities that promote connection with nature, teamwork, and resilience, such as hiking, orienteering, and environmental awareness activities.
In addition to field and court sports, each pupil receives a dedicated, annual block of swimming lessons in our modern, indoor heated pool. This specialized aquatic segment focuses directly on building vital water safety skills, refining stroke mechanics, and enhancing swimming proficiency to promote comprehensive physical fitness and water confidence.
PYP Physical Education encourages pupils to apply their physical, social, and personal learning directly to real-world contexts. By actively participating in community sports, health campaigns, fitness challenges, and broader environmental or school-wide events, pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility towards themselves and their community.
This physical journey is central to the PYP’s focus on personal, social, and physical education (PSPE), helping shape pupils into balanced, reflective, and principled individuals. It nurtures key attributes of the IB Learner Profile, training pupils to approach physical challenges as collaborative communicators, resilient risk-takers, and mindful advocates for global health.
