Developing physical literacy, healthy habits and lifelong well-being.
Physical Education (PE) in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Malvern College Hong Kong is designed to promote the physical, social, and emotional well-being of students aged 11 to 16. The PE curriculum aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of physical activity, movement, and healthy lifestyles, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for lifelong fitness and well-being.
The MYP Physical Education curriculum employs an inquiry-based and student-centred approach, encouraging active participation and engagement. Key elements of the teaching approach include:
Students engage in a variety of physical activities and sports, focusing on developing fundamental movement skills, tactics, techniques, and overall physical fitness. The curriculum is designed to challenge students at their own levels and help them improve their performance.
Students are encouraged to explore topics related to health, fitness, and movement. By posing questions, conducting research, and reflecting on their experiences, they develop a deeper understanding of how physical activity contributes to their overall health and well-being.
Through group activities, team sports, and cooperative challenges, students learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and respect for others. PE fosters inclusivity and encourages students to work together to achieve common goals.
By exploring the concepts of health, fitness, and physical activity, students are encouraged to make informed decisions about their lifestyles. The curriculum emphasises the practical application of skills and knowledge to encourage participation in physical activity beyond school.
The MYP Physical Education curriculum encompasses a variety of activities and sports to promote physical literacy and holistic development. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Skypitch, Indoor Sports Hall, 25m Indoor Heated Swimming Pool, Dance Studio, and dedicated PE sports rooms, enhancing their learning experience. Some common areas of focus include:
Students participate in a range of sports - both individual (such as athletics and swimming) and team-based (such as basketball, football, and volleyball) - to develop skills in different contexts. Swimming lessons are incorporated as an essential part of the curriculum, promoting water safety and proficiency while also encouraging fitness and enjoyment in the water.
Students learn about fitness principles, training methods, and the importance of cardiovascular fitness, strength, and flexibility. They engage in fitness assessments and develop personal fitness goals tailored to their individual needs.
The curriculum includes topics related to nutrition, mental health, and the benefits of physical activity. Students gain an understanding of how lifestyle choices affect their well-being and are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions.
These experiences foster teamwork and resilience while encouraging students to connect with nature and understand the importance of outdoor pursuits. Through adventurous activities, students can challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.
By integrating diverse sports and activities within a well-equipped environment, the MYP Physical Education curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong appreciation for active living and well-being.
Physical Education is an integral part of the MYP framework, allowing students to link their learning to other subject areas, such as science (understanding the human body) and personal development (social skills and teamwork). Students are encouraged to reflect on their interactions and experiences, supporting the development of the IB learner profile attributes, including being balanced, reflective, and principled.
