Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK) was proud to host the annual University Fair this month, welcoming representatives from over 60 universities across the UK, the US, and Hong Kong. It was an invaluable opportunity for our DP and MYP pupils to step beyond the classroom and begin exploring the diverse pathways available to them after graduation.
Insights from Global Experts
The morning kicked off with a practical look at higher education in the UK. Mr. Matthew Lloyd, representing the University of Manchester, encouraged our pupils to look beyond university rankings and focus on what truly matters when choosing a path. He challenged them to start with three fundamental questions: Why do I want to go to university? What would I like to study? And where would I like to live?
Mr. Lloyd provided actionable advice on navigating the UK application process, emphasising the importance of examining course structure, placement opportunities, and university life. Most importantly, he urged students to maintain an authentic personal voice throughout their personal statements.
Connecting and Exploring
Following the opening talks, the University Fair truly came to life. Pupils moved between booths, speaking directly with university representatives. This was a chance to dig deep into specific entry requirements, compare programmes, and ask tailored questions about their own unique interests and aspirations.
The event concluded with an insightful session by Professor Pui Hong Chung, Assistant Dean (Health Sciences Programmes & Admissions) at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. He offered a fascinating look at the breadth of opportunities within health sciences, illustrating how fields ranging from public to global health can open doors to diverse and impactful careers.
A Journey, Not a Destination
More than simply choosing a university, the goal of the event was to help our pupils ask better questions, explore their passions, and feel empowered to make informed choices.
Reflecting on the importance of this guidance, Mr. Terence Yau, Associate Director of University & Careers Guidance, shared:
“Navigating university and career pathways is about paving the next stage in the journey of life. It is certainly not about finding a final destination as we are firm believers in lifelong learning at MCHK. We can view the stage of tertiary education and the early stages of our careers as a ‘steppingstone’ for personal, intellectual, and professional growth.
Guided by our school motto, Sapiens qui prospicit (“Wise the one who looks ahead”), the MCHK University Fair 2026 directly supported this process. By connecting Hundred and Sixth Form pupils with university admissions representatives, the fair helped clarify admissions requirements, course details, and offerings by universities. It expanded our pupils’ horizons through active dialogue and empowered them to chart a personalised path forward with confidence.”
